Bat Roosts Database - North East Wales

This dataset is the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) regional database of bat roosts for all species of bats found in North East Wales. This includes the site name, grid reference, species, date and abundance where available. The purpose of this data capture was to record species distribution and details of bat roosts, to assist CCW's conservation work. In particular, to provide information when dealing with development proposals, to support the monitoring and notification of SSSIs, and to aid with the monitoring and reporting on the status and trends of protected bat species.

Lineage: This dataset covers the North East Wales, including Flint, Denbighshire, Conway, Wrexham with some occasional records in Powys and Gwynedd. Data was generated from visits to roosts by CCW staff and volunteers following a request, from enquiries from members of the public received by CCW, and/or from specialist groups. The data was collected and entered into MapInfo by regional staff. Data was subsequently validated and transferred to Recorder 2002. All species names and dates have been validated during transfer process to Recorder 2002. Data recorder names are not stored electronically, although these could be found within the paper files. Since then this data and custodianship of the data has been given to Cofnod to manage as a top copy for NRW. The data ownership remains with NRW, and Cofnod have amalgamated this with GWYBATs for produce the Natural Resources Wales North Wales Bat Roosts dataset available on the NBN Gateway. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. The dataset contains the following sensitive data: a) Location of bat roosts in private buildings or underground sites, shown at a more detailed scale than 1km sqare (4 figure grid reference). Disclosure would adverse affect the protection of the species due to risk of disturbance and alienation of the landowner. b) Names and addresses of landowners, and names of recorders for which CCW does not have consent to release.
