Severn Estuary Database Phase 2
This data is made up of the results from evaluating the nature conservation resource of the sediment environment in the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. This database was created for the Marine Aggregates Resource Management Planning System (MARMPS), a National Assembly project, in order to create a decision-support tool for the Environment Minister when making decisions on aggregate extraction licences.

This database is made up of c. 80 data layers produced in the Bristol Channel Marine Aggregates Study (BCMAS) as part of former CCW's response to the Marine Aggregates Dredging Policy. It was completely reformatted due to a new set of requirements and to conduct a review of the data again. There is a scoring mechanism (0, 1, 2, 3. 0 = neutral sensitivity, 3 = highest sensitivity) for features and supporting habitats for each of the 49 coastal cells in four separate categories: Ramsar, Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA) and Site of Special Scientific Importance (SSSI). In addition there are tabs to include information on Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty (AONB), National Nature Reserves (NNR), Marine Nature Reserves (MNR), and Biodiversity Action Plans (BAP) and comments for each cell. There is a summary mechanism which calculates the maximum sensitivity for any cell for all four scored categories (must be maximum, not average).
