Bat Roosts Database - South Wales (BATDATA-WALES) 1982-1997
This is a former Countryside Council for Wales' (CCW) regional dataset of bat roosts in South Wales, containing approximately 600 records. Includes the location of roosts, roost type, species records and public enquiries and/or details of visits to roosts by CCW staff or other bat experts. The purpose of this data capture was to record species distribution and details of bat roosts. This data has been used to provide information when dealing with development proposals, to support the monitoring and notification of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and to aid with the monitoring and reporting on the status and trends of protected bat species. Original data was created by Nature Conservancy Council as part of a UK-wide dataset and Welsh records were transferred to CCW in 1991. This dataset has not been validated and there may be some errors in grid references and place names.

This is a static dataset. Data was generated from visits to roosts by staff and volunteers and/or from enquiries received by NCC or CCW. This dataset only covers south-east Wales. Natural Resources Wales hold the top copy of BATDATA-WALES. Some of these records do appear in other surveys as follows. BATSITES-WALES which fed into BATSITES-UK also appear in BATDATA-WALES, however does not contain the monitoring data. In addition to this Welsh Horseshoe Bat Summer Roost Surveillance Database holds some of the BATDATA-WALES data.

The sensitive data is as follows: [A] Location of bat roosts in private buildings or underground sites, shown as at a more detailed scale than 1km square (4 figure grid reference). Disclosure would adverse affect the protection of the species due to risk of disturbance and alienation of the landowner. [B] Names and addresses of landowners, and names of recorders for which CCW does not have consent to release. [C] Some data is owned by volunteer recorders, who may wish to impose additional access restrictions. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Team. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.
