Insect Survey Results for Two Brown Field Sand Quarry Sites, Borras Quarry and Marford Quarry, in North-East Wales (2013)
The dataset contains the results from insect surveys conducted on two sand quarries in north-east Wales, Borras Quarry (162 species recorded) and Marford Quarry (145 species recorded). The data collected from Borras Quarry includes 14 psammophilic, 70 aculeate species. The data collected from Marford quarry includes 8 psammophilic and 69 aculeate species. The aim of this data collection was to identify whether the sand quarries supported suitable conditions for invertebrate species, in order to make recommendations for securing long-term sympathetic management of key sites. The diversity of aculeate species recorded from both quarries to date (135 species in total) ranks these areas as the most species-rich sites in Wales.

Borras Quarry and Marford Quarry were each visited on several occasions to record the invertebrates present. The data collected focused particularly on aculeate bees, wasps, ants, beetles and flies. Sampling techniques included visual searches, sweep-netting, pitfall-trapping and water-trapping. This data was collected in 2013, further to the previous years work. In 2012, surveys were undertaken at Borras Quarry, Fagl Lane Quarry and Fron Haul Quarry.
