Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Otter in the Afon Mawddach catchment area (2006)
The Afon Mawwdach catchment forms part of two Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) the Afon Eden SAC and the Pen Llyn a Sarnau SAC. Current and potential distribution, and breeding success of the otter were investigated, as well as identifying and mapping potential and actual breeding habitat and feeding ponds and ditches. A major focus of this project is an assessment of the current and potential breeding success of the otter within the catchment, so that conservation objectives can be set, and future trends can be identified.

The methodology for this study is based on work carried out for the European Commission's Life Nature Programme, to investigate the ecological requirements for otter breeding. Information on otter breeding activity is derived from otter road deaths, and from reports of otter cub sightings (collected during visits to householders living close to watercourses). Possible and potential breeding sites were identified from Phase 1 maps, and by walk-over surveys of all possible sites to confirm breeding site potential. A similar method was used to locate potential amphibian feeding sites for otters. The Mawddach system was divided into 4 sub-catchments: Mawddach Estuary; Afon Mawddach (fresh water); Afon Wnion; and Afon Eden.
