Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Otter in the Afon Tywi Catchment Area (2005)
The former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) commissioned this monitoring to assess the condition and conservation status of the European otter Lutra lutra, within the Afon Tywi Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and catchment. The otter, which has made a significant recovery in numbers from a rapid decline in the 1950's though to the early 1970's, is still considered to be rare, and across most of Europe is endangered. Indeed in many countries it is now considered extinct, making the populations in Wales all the more significant. The results of this project, combined with those of similar projects instigated by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) on other SAC river catchments over the past two years, and in future years, will provide a valuable and unique picture of the otter in Wales.

A variety of methods were used to gather information about otter breeding activity on the catchment. These might broadly be described under the headings of questionnaires, interviews, record searches, and direct contacts with individuals thought likely to hold relevant information. In addition site inspections were carried out, as well as map searches and inspection of Phase 1 data and aerial photographs. Other records were obtained from agencies such as the Countryside Council for Wales and the Environment Agency. A definition of a breeding site was set out by Liles in his report for the European Commission's Life Nature Programme to investigate the ecological requirements for breeding otters (Liles, 2003). This criteria was used and Using the information gathered above, a list of some 112 sites was compiled, and throughout September, October and December 2004, most of these sites were visited and an inspection made of the habitat. Each river was divided into kilometre lengths in order to provide an easy means of identifying stretches which are of particular importance to otters (sightings, breeding and feeding sites). From this each breeding site or feeding pond were ascribed to a particular kilometre stretch.
