The otter, which has made a significant recovery in numbers from a rapid decline in the 1950's though to the early 1970's, is still considered to be rare, and across most of Europe is endangered. Indeed in many countries it is now considered extinct, making the populations in Wales all the more significant. The results of this project, combined with those of similar projects instigated by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) on other SAC river catchments over the past two years, and in future years, will provide a valuable and unique picture of the otter in Wales.
