Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ ) Subtidal Monitoring Project - Animal Communities on Stones
The results of subtidal monitoring undertaken on animal communities found on stones and pebbles at a site within Skomer Marine Nature Reserve. The purpose of this data capture was to observe and record seasonal settlement and colonisation of pebble habitat by marine fauna and record the changes in abundance and where possible the condition of the animals collected over a year.

6 visits were made to the site at two monthly intervals. During each visit two samples of stones were collected from the monitoring area using a quadrat of 25cm x 25cm. Notes of the abundance of conspicuous species were made in the immediate vicinity of the monitoring site and along a transect. Close up photographs were taken to provide extra details. Surface seawater temperatures were measured by means of a mercury thermometer. In the laboratory each stone was examined individually and attached fauna recorded. Where possible individuals were counted, but for colonial and encrusting species an alternative method was to note the presence of the species on a particular stone then count the number of stones in each sample to provide a measure of percentage occurrence. This data forms part of the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas (see separate metadata entry).
