Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ ) - Subtidal Monitoring
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. Data collected during the development and implementation of low budget stereo-photographic monitoring of rocky subtidal epibenthic communities in within Skomer marine reserve. The data includes descriptions of communities present and subsequent changes in these communities over a one year period (1982 - 1983). The Skomer subtidal monitoring project was established as an ongoing project however this dataset includes the results from the first year only. Purpose of this data capture was to locate and permanently mark suitable monitoring stations and to observe and record the topography and epibenthic communities present in order to enable the assessment of the natural fluctuations in subtidal communities.

Stereophotography was chosen as sampling technique due to it being a non-destructive technique which requires minimal manpower and biological expertise. It also provides three dimensional images. Having considered accessibility, seabed topography etc, the north-east coast of Skomer was chosen as a location for establishing the permanent transect. A transect line was run from 30m to 5m and secured to pitons at intervals, marker tags were fixed to the line at 5m depth intervals from 5m to 25m and at these depths 1.5m fixed quadrats were secured with pitons. The photographs taken were analysed by viewing slides through two stereomicroscopes, using a hand-held commercial stereoslide viewer and examining the prints with photogrammetric apparatus. Each identifiable species or groups of species and biotic or non-biotic substrate is defined as a category, the occurrence of categories in quadrats is recorded quantitatively. The abundance of categories was estimated using two methods- percentage cover of categories was estimated by systematic point counting, and counts of numbers per unit area were made of certain categories.
