Epipelic and epilithic microalgal distribution, density and relative abundance following the Sea Empress oil spill.
The ecological impact of a pollution event such as the Sea Empress oil spill is readily observable on macroscopic plants and animals. Although microscopic organisms are not as easily observed and studied they may be a crucial part of the ecosystem structure and function. This dataset contains the result of a study into the effects of oil contamination on epipelic and epilithic microalgal communities in coastal habitats of South West Wales. Sites contaminated by the Sea Empress oil spill were compared to a nearby adjacent uncontaminated site. Purpose of this data capture was to study the effects of oil contamination on the distribution, density and abundance of epipelic and epilithic microscopic algal communities.

Four collecting sites were established beginning at Abereiddy (not oiled, control) and continuing southerly to Newgale and Popton (lightly to medium oiled) and terminating at West Angle (heavily oiled). Replicate samples were collected at all four sites for the two sampling dates. Sediments (coarse grain material) exposed in the intertidal zome were collected for epipleic algae and exposed rocks were scraped for epilithic algae, seawater samples were collected for nutrient analysis and photographs taken at all sites. Samples were all sent to the laboratory for analysis. Replicate samples collected on 3-4 August and 27-29 September 1996. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
