Condition of Crustose Coralline Red Algae in Pembrokeshire After the Sea Empress Disaster
Following the Sea Empress oil spill observations on the shores of West Angle Bay and Bluck's Pool and The Pole at Castlemartin showed that some populations of crustose coralline algae had become bleached and white. Collections were made at this time and during the following year to determine the nature of the bleaching and to follow the recovery, or otherwise, of these plants. The purpose of this data capture was to determine the nature of the bleaching in crustose coralline algae and to follow the recovery, or otherwise, of these plants. Two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) were chosen for regular monitoring, the north shore of West Angle Bay 510 41.8' N 50 06.5' W and Bluck's Pool and The Pole, Castlemartin at 510 38' N 50 03' W. Further observations and specimens were obtained from Blaise Bullimore on Skomer (510 44' N 50 17' W), Manorbier (510 38.5' N 40 48.35' W), Worm's Head, Gower (510 33.5' N 40 19' W), Porth Trecastell, Anglesey (53 0 12' N 40 25.9' W) and Bardsey Island (520 45' N 40 45'W).

Two sites (both Sites of Special Scientific Interest) were chosen for regular monitoring during the year from April 1996-April 1997. The sites were the north shore of West Angle Bay and Bluck's Pool and The Pole, Castlemartin. These sites had been observed during and immediately after the spillage of the oil thus making it possible to add to the results of the actual survey period. Further observations and specimens were obtained from Blaise Bullimore on Skomer. Populations for sampling were chosen mainly on the basis of bleached thalli having been observed there at the time of the Sea Empress disaster. As far as possible the same populations were observed on each visit, but it was not possible to ensure that the same actual plants were observed and the quadrats in the photographs were only placed in approximately the same place each time, they did, however, provide a regular scale for comparison. The quadrat was 25 cm square. Increased monitoring and impact assessment following the Sea Empress oil spill (algal bleaching).
