JNCC Acoustic Multibeam Echosounder Survey of Selected Sites off the North Coast of Anglesey as part of the Mapping European Seabed Habitats (MESH) Project (3rd Party Data)
During the summer of 2005, JNCC collaborated with partners of the HABMAP project to survey areas of potential Annex 1 habitat (primarily reef) in the Irish Sea. This was to support nature conservation initiatives beyond 12 nm North of Anglesey. This multibeam echosounder survey was carried out alongside single-beam data collection, seabed sampling and towed video imaging. Four areas of seabed covering approximately 140 sq km were surveyed and following data analysis, the area of study was broadly characterised by a complex topography and mixed sediment mosaics. The purpose of this data capture was to obtain MBES coverage of the study areas for further interpretation and analysis in conjunction with other data gathered in the area, for the purpose of identifying Annex 1 subtidal habitats. Confidence in data is high. Data depth corrected for tide using POLPRED software which utilises one or more of Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory's hydrodyamic models. CARIS HIPS / SIPS software used to create surfaces and gridded datasets by experienced surveyors.

Multibeam echosounder data acquired using Kongsberg Simrad EM1002 hull mounted on the R/V Celtic voyager. Frequency 93kHz (outer +/- 20 degrees) and 98kHz (inner +/- 50 degree swath centered at Nadir) utilising MERLIN software package. Swath ideally kept at max of 68n degrees to cover approximately 4.7 times water depth. Line spacing approximately 200 m giving 15-20% overlap. Three sound velocity drops made during cruise to calibrate to water conditions. Dataset collected as part of a collaborative cruise with JNCC and the Irish Marine Institute, data for the HABMAP project collected during the same cruise.
