Marine Mammal and Marine Turtle Strandings (Welsh Coast) (3rd Party Data)
This dataset contains information on marine mammal and turtle strandings along the Welsh coast. As contributors to the project, former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) hold a copy of the data up to 2006. The project is run by the Marine Environment Monitoring group and originally received sponsorship from DEFRA, Natural History Museum and funding from Special Areas of Conservation (SAC's). However the projects funding was cut. The purpose of this data capture was to obtain information on disease and cause of death within marine mammal and turtle populations along the Welsh Coastline.

Data includes the number of individuals of different species found stranded, the percentage of live strandings and the number of animals suitable for post mortem. A 24 hour Strandings Answerphone, is interrogated at regular intervals. A network of volunteers, rangers, wardens, coastal officers and harbour masters has been formed who can be contacted by the Strandings Co-ordinator to confirm the stranding, assess its condition and secure the animal from the effects of the tide, predation etc. until it can be dealt with. Dead animals undergo a post mortem examination. Cetacean records are passed to the Natural History Museum in London for correlation. Since 1913, cetacean records have been, and continue to be kept, by the NHM, in co-operation with the Receiver of Wrecks and HM Coastguard.
