As contributors to the project, former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) hold a copy of the data up to 2006. The project is run by the Marine Environment Monitoring group and originally received sponsorship from DEFRA, Natural History Museum and funding from Special Areas of Conservation (SAC's). However the projects funding was cut. The purpose of this data capture was to obtain information on disease and cause of death within marine mammal and turtle populations along the Welsh Coastline. This dataset contains information on marine mammal and turtle strandings along the Welsh coast. Dead animals undergo a post mortem examination. Cetacean records are passed to the Natural History Museum in London for correlation. Since 1913, cetacean records have been, and continue to be kept, by the NHM, in co-operation with the Receiver of Wrecks and HM Coastguard.
