All Wales Phase 1 Terrestrial - Target Notes
During the terrestrial Phase 1 Survey of Wales thousands of target note and cover notes were created. Over the last 6 years these notes have all been scanned and a layer file (ARCMAP) has been created to record the position and reference number of Phase 1 target notes. The original field surveys were carried out as part of a national habitat survey programme required to implement conservation at a local level. The target notes layer was created as a way of collating all the Phase 1 terrestrial target note information for All Wales and to allow the pdf target notes to be easily accessible to all staff. Field survey spanned from 1979 to 1997, target notes were produced between 1989 and 1997 and the scanning and digitisation took place between 2004 and 2010.

See the metadata for 'Phase 1 Habitat Survey of Wales 1979-1997' in the 'part of' field below for methods of field survey. The target notes collected as part of the survey were scanned as 2 sided documents with a resolution of 300dpi on a black and white scale (where the quality of the hand written note allows). These documents are stored in DMS, NRW's Electronic Records and Data Management System. A layer was created with points marking the location of each target note, these points contain a hotlink which links to the scanned document in DMS. Hotlinks only work in the CCW environment. Scans of the cover note for each 5km grid square were also made and stored in a separate layer called phase1_5k_generalpdfnotes. For each target note that contains sensitive information, such as the site owner's name, a non-sensitive 'related' version has also been saved in DMS. The senstitive species records are collated in an excel spreadsheet. All field mapping was carried out by trained and closely co-ordinated teams of surveyors. A study of survey reliability was conducted during the lowland phase (Kerry, Rimes, Smith, Williams. 1994. An Assessment of Errors in Phase I Habitat Survey in Wales. Bangor: Countryside Council for Wales, Report No. 94/4/1). It showed the field mapping to be 83% repeatable (Stevens, Blackstock, Howe, Stevens. 2004. Repeatability of Phase 1 habitat survey. J. Environ. Manage. 73, 53-59).The electronic data have undergone a series of checks for accuracy both by the contractor and subsequently within CCW. There are a small proportion of missing target notes and cover sheets which are documented in the layer file. Field survey spanned from 1979 to 1997, target notes were produced between 1989 and 1997 and the scanning and digitisation took place between 2004 and 2010.
