The Upland Habitat Survey GIS dataset is based largely on vegetation maps produced by the Wales Field Unit of the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) using the Ratcliffe and Birks vegetation classification. It also contains National Vegetation Classification (NVC) maps for parts of five upland sites and Phase 1 Survey information for three areas of Common Land. The Habitat layer is a point layer that shows the location of different habitats and habitat strings mapped in mosaic polygons on the Ratcliffe and Birks vegetation maps. The original field surveys were carried out as part of a national habitat survey programme required to implement conservation at a local level. The GIS dataset was created as part of the remit of the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and now Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to identify all areas of 'open country' in Wales for the implementation of The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. The Upland Habitat Survey GIS dataset has been combined with digitised data from the terrestrial Phase 1 survey to form the AllWales Phase 1 GIS dataset.
