Non Native Species Data - Sargassum muticum around Wales
The purpose of this data capture was to collate and monitor the spread of non-native species in Wales. This survey contains a series of records of the non-native marine alga, Sargassum muticum, around Wales. Many of the records were obtained during the intertidal phase 1 survey, while others are anecdotal records from both Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) staff and various other recorders surveying the shoreline for both work or recreationally. The dataset has been fully validated. All grid references have been cross-referenced against site name. The majority of records were recorded by specialists. The data was collated in order to monitor the spread of non-native species in Wales.

Field observations and incidental records taken as part of the CCW Phase 1 Intertidal Survey. Where records were taken for specialised habitats, such as rock pools, these were recorded as part of a timed count. This dataset is maintained and added to as an excel spreadsheet by marine staff within Natural Resources Wales. A GIS layer has also been generated from the excel spreadsheet and the majority of records added to Marine Recorder (duplicate or restricted records are not added). When updates are added a copy is archived under media no. 230.
