Monitoring trials were developed in relation to these two features. During the late 1990's there was a dynamic period where the development of marine monitoring and surveillance under the Habitats and Species Directive was undertaken. The presence of the horse mussel Modiolus modiolus off the north Pen Llyn is thought to have been known since the early 19th Century. The extent of the biogenic reef feature was considered an important attribute to monitor as part of the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC. This dataset consists of digital footage of the horse mussel (Modiolus modiolus) reef collected in 1999. Data was collected to validate the results of an acoustic monitoring survey of the Modiolus modiolus reefs present within the SAC.
