Across Wales Drop-down Video monitoring 2004-2005
Drop-down video surveys of Special Area of Conservation (SACs) across Wales (Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau, Menai Strait and Conwy Bay, Cardigan Bay and Pembrokeshire). Work carried out by Seastar Survey under contract to Countryside Council of Wales (CCW). The data was collected to enable site monitoring to support management and reporting of SACs in Wales. The monitoring of subtidal aspects of SACs will indicate whether the desired condition of the feature of interest for which the site was designated is being achieved. The work will also enable judgements to be made about whether the management of the site is appropriate. Analysis of video recordings from the 2005 survey will be used to produce descriptions of the seabed environment including substrata and faunal communities as well as classifying the different sites into biotopes according to Connor et al. (2004). Survey areas within the SACs focused on north Pen Llyn, Bardsey Island, Tremadog Bay and Moelfre in north Wales, areas off Cardigan Island, Cemaes Head and between Aberaeron and Llangranog (off Newquay) within Cardigan Bay, and Hats and Barrels Reef, Bishops and Clerks, Skokholm Island and the Castlemartin ridges in Pembrokeshire.

Drop down video surveying was conducted at well-defined sites. Surveys were carried out in 2004 and 2005. The 2004 survey was carried over August 23-26, and focused on the Cardigan Bay SAC. 2005 survey work was carried out during the period May to July and focused on the other SACs. Ground truthing was carried out over September 6-10 2004. Data collection follows trials of the drop-down video monitoring technique (Sanderson et al., 2001; CCW Marine Monitoring report No. 1, CCW Marine Monitoring report No. 15). Future data collection is planned annually, visiting the same sites to form a time-series of comparative data. In 2010 a subset of videos were re-analysed to provide further habitat and species detail. In 2012 all video data was reanalysed in April 2012. Methods and site locations are described in CCW Marine Monitoring Report No. 24a. A separate report (CCW Marine Monitoring report No, 24b) details exact quality control and standard operating procedures in relation to survey methodologies used. Additional ground truthing was carried out in September 2004 by a team of 6 divers at 22 sites. Species and habitat data entered into Marine Recorder.
