SAC Monitoring: Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) Populations at Halkyn Mountain / Mynydd Helygain Special Area of Conservation (SAC) (2005)
Monitoring of Great Crested Newts (GCNs) on Halkyn Mountain Special Area of Conservation (SAC), under contract. The monitoring consisted of the following: a) Survey of 45 ponds, where GCN had previously been recorded, for eggs, larvae and juveniles and other environmental data. b) Mapping of terrestrial habitat within 250m of pond to assess the value of the habitat for GCNs (total of 183.9ha). c) Collation of existing GCN count data from 1985 to 2005 in known display ponds in the SAC. d) Condition assessment of GCN as a SAC feature. This dataset forms part of the Wales-wide Common Standards Monitoring. The aim of this data capture was to assess the condition of designated SAC features based on site-specific performance indicators, and to record aspects of their management, both as an aid to management decisions and for reporting at a variety of scales.

Various methodologies were used in this data collection. Terrestrial Habitat - Terrestrial habitat for great crested newts was defined by Countryside Council for Wales as being within 250 m of each pond. Areas that fell outside the boundary of the SAC were excluded from the mapping. Using MapInfo Professional v 6.5 GIS software, maps were produced showing a habitat survey zone of 250 m radius around each of the ponds to be surveyed. A 10m x 10m grid was overlaid onto this base map in order to classify the terrestrial habitat at the required resolution. Pond Assessments - All 45 ponds were revisited on 23rd August 2005 to undertake the pond assessments. Estimates were made of: - The percentage of the pond surface shaded by native macrophytes; - The percentage of the entire pond perimeter shaded to at least 1m from the shore; - The percentage of the southern perimeter shaded; and - Whether the pond was less than 10cm deep at its deepest point. Larval Surveys - A torchlight survey using a 1 million candle power Clulite torch was undertaken on 23rd August 2005 of all ponds still containing water, in order to determine the presence of larvae/juveniles. Egg searches - Natural and artificial egg laying substrates within 1m of the shore were inspected for the presence of Triturus cristatus eggs. Signs of the presence of fish or waterfowl were also recorded at this time, as well as the presence of any invasive species such as Crassula helmsii, or evidence of potential disturbance or pollution.
