Chough Breeding Population Surveillance in Pembrokeshire
Surveillance of breeding population (including productivity and recruitment) and non-breeding population of Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. Former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) collect and collate data from the south Pembrokeshire coastline which includes Caldey Island, and the Castlemartin Coast Special Protection Area (SPA). SPAs are strictly protected sites classified in accordance with Article 4 of the EC Birds Directive, which came into force in April 1979. They are classified for rare and vulnerable birds (as listed on Annex I of the Directive), and for regularly occurring migratory species. Castlemartin SPA is designed for breeding and over wintering choughs. This includes the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park (PCNP) coordinate records from St Anne's Head to Cemaes Head and the offshore islands, including Ramsey (SPA) and St David's Head). In this dataset some records date from early 1960s forming part of the first national survey; recording was established at the main study area in 1978 but most records date from 1982. There were numerous national and local purposes to this data capture. National purposes: - To contribute to decadal national and international surveys of chough and to update JNCC records for reporting under the Birds Directive (SPAs) and Habitats Directive (Special Areas of Conservation (SAC)). Local purposes - To assess condition of chough as an Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) feature in Castlemartin Coast SPA; - To maintain up-to-date records of concentrations of chough relevant to management of recreation (sea cliff-climbing and coasteering); - To service update data requirements for local chough Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), in partnership with other members of a local chough study group, including PCNP Authority who coordinate records for rest of Pembrokeshire.

Breeding population is censused annually from cliff-tops and nest site locations recorded in GIS register. Annual estimates of breeding productivity are made. Estimates of recruitment to population are made based on locally managed database of colour-ringed sightings of nestlings within two SPA study areas (Castlemartin and Ramsey Island) and contribution to all Wales chough colour-ringed sightings database. GIS register of feeding and roosting areas for breeding and non-breeding birds is maintained. The dataset is linked to periodic decadal national surveys, e.g. 1982, 1992, 2002. Also see SCARABBS and RBBP for all Wales monitoring.
