Dormouse Database (1905 - 2004)
The database was constructed to hold data arising from the Great Nut Hunt and build a complete and up to date picture of the distribution of the dormouse. This has been used for reporting on the delivery of the Biodiversity Action Plan. England and Wales. The dormouse does not occur in Scotland or Northern Ireland. The dataset has relied largely on contributed data rather than proactive survey, so it suffers from bias towards places that people visited during the Great Nut Hunts. Grid references would normally refer to the centroid of a wood where the dormouse was found, rather than the actual point. Many grid references have not been checked on a GIS to confirm that they fall within the woodland boundary; this is an on-going process and would normally result in an 8-figure (10m resolution) grid reference being used. This dataset includes the name of recorder, site name, grid reference and type of sighting (for example dead or alive, location of nest). Records originate from a variety of sources, with the collation held and maintained by Tony Mitchell-Jones at English Nature. It is an incomplete directory of sites, some of which are monitored annually as part of the national monitoring scheme. Only the most recent record for each site is included in this dataset, historical data is held in the original database. The source data also includes comments and the record source. Records use 6 figure British National Grid references (precision unknown), all give the centre of the site.

The presence of dormice was identified in several different ways, which are recorded in the dataset. These have varying degrees of confidence. * High confidence: Live specimen; dead specimen; confirmed hazel nut; nest in box. * Medium confidence: Unconfirmed hazel nut; nest in vegetation. * Low confidence: Report; other; unknown; unconfirmed nest. 1) Hazel nuts opened by dormice were collected by members of the public in 2 Great Nut Hunts. All opened nuts were checked by Dr P Morris. 2) occasional records submitted by individuals (very few records). 3) Site data from the National Dormouse Monitoring programme. This would normally include data from live animals seen at the site. Data collection has been limited to records collected since 1990. From that time, collection has been sporadic and related to the Great Nut Hunt and other projects which collected dormouse records (eg hedgerow project). The majority of records are based on the identification of hazel nuts opened in a characteristic way by dormice. These can be found at any time of year although winter is probably the most productive time) and indicate the presence of dormice within the past 12 months or so (depending on the decay rate of nut shells). For this reason, the year of the record is more important than the exact date.
