The survey work was split into two time periods, with the first Phase 2 lowland peatland surveys being conducted between 1977 and 1982 (this dataset). There was then a break between this and the second tranche of surveys which have occurred from 2004 onwards. These more modern surveys were conducted on sites already covered on the 1997-1982 surveys and on newer identified sites. FenBASE is an ecological database on fens maintained by the Wetland Research Group, University of Sheffield. Pre-NVC survey of 4100 quadrats of vegetation data, collected on paper and held in the FENBASE database. Includes site summaries (known as Wales Wetland Survey). Also includes some slides. FenBASE was created to provide a comprehensive database of information pertaining to the fens within England. FenBASE data were used to evaluate the potential issue of nutrient enrichment of basin fens at the regional level, and provide an overview of mitigation option applicable to those sites at risk from nutrient enrichment. It is also used to provide indication of additional data that would be appropriate to further aid assessment and evaluation.
