The original field surveys were carried out as part of a national habitat survey programme required to implement conservation at a local level. An all-Wales electronic dataset was created for the generation of national statistics on habitat coverage. The dataset was subsequently simplified and imported into a GIS to enable its disaggregation into various different geographical regions within Wales (see All Wales Phase 1 Terrestrial - 1Kmsq - GIS Dataset). The database was created in 1999 using data from the Phase 1 Habitat Survey of Wales undertaken between 1979 and 1999. This table was held in Paradox database but then was converted into Access. It lists Phase 1 habitat areas in every 1 km square in Wales. Habitat area measurements are sub-divided within 1 km squares by, Region, District, Survey programme (Terrestrial Phase 1 Survey and upland surveys), Upland and lowland, and, for land covered by the terrestrial Phase 1 survey, statutory and non-statutory at the time of survey.
