Threat of landfill sites to Marine Protected Area habitat features in Wales
The map package shows the potential overall threat coastal landfill sites in Wales pose to Marine Protected Area (MPA) habitat features under a present day epoch (2005-2025), a medium term epoch (2025-2055) and a long-term epoch (2055-2105). Overall threat presented in the map package is a combination of the risk of waste being released from the landfill site and the vulnerability of MPA habitat features to waste if released from these sites. The map package ultimately shows the results of a high-level assessment on the potential impacts of coastal landfill sites to MPAs. The study aimed to provide an initial assessment of this impact to highlight where regional or site-specific investigations should be undertaken to further understand the threat coastal landfill sites pose to MPA features. The boundaries of the Operational Areas and MPAs are also included in the map package. Excel files of the attribute tables from the GIS map package are also provided. More information on the rationale, methods, results and assumptions can be found in the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Evidence Report 673.

The coastal landfill sites used in this dataset are derived from Historic Landfill Sites spatial dataset ( https://datamap.gov.wales/layers/inspire-nrw:NRW_Historic_Landfill_Sites ) and a dataset of currently licenced landfill sites provided by NRW. Overall threat as determined to be a combination of the risk of waste being released from the landfill site and the vulnerability of MPA habitat features to the waste if released from these sites. This report and supporting data provides a high-level approach for determining which landfill sites at the coast have potential to pose the greatest threat to MPA features in Wales. Given the high-level approach to this assessment, the aim was to inform where more detailed investigations should be undertaken on specific landfills or regions of potential concern. Given the level of confidence related to some of the project outputs it is not possible to use this information to ascertain accurate site-specific information. Instead, it is recommended that future studies use location specific data to refine the results of this assessment. For example, data about the local hydrodynamics, local environmental conditions, current management measures in place, exact contents and contamination levels contained within and released from the landfill, and specific habitat/species sensitivity to specific landfill pressures, will aid a better understanding of the local site-specific impacts arising from landfills. More information on the rationale, methods, results and assumptions can be found in the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Evidence Report 673
