A survey and assessment of the saproxylic invertebrate fauna of Gregynog National Nature Reserve, Powys - 2022
The Gregynog Hall Estate comprises about 300ha of ancient wood pasture habitats within the old county of Montgomeryshire. The 15ha of Great Wood were designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its rich epiphytic lichen communities in 1978 although it later proved to also have significant interest for invertebrates and especially those species associated with the decaying wood (saproxylic) habitats provided by the abundance of veteran trees. The SSSI was extended in 2011 and the whole estate declared a National Nature Reserve in 2012. A survey of the saproxylic invertebrates of the wider NNR was commissioned by Natural Resources Wales in 2022. This is the first baseline survey of the fauna, previous research comprising exploratory surveys only. The aims of the survey were to determine the current condition of the saproxylic invertebrate fauna and to identify any threats.

The baseline standard for saproxylic invertebrate surveys is for three visits to be carried out across the field season, targeting late spring, high summer and autumn. Given the large extent of the NNR and the desire to operate some flight interception trapping in parallel with field survey each visit involved more than one day. The first exploratory visit was carried out on 23rd April 2022 and ten flight interception traps positioned on 24th April. The second visit took place on 22nd May and two additional flight traps were positioned. The third visit covered 7th to 9th June and targeted hawthorn blossom as well as emptying and maintaining the traps. The fourth visit was over 11th and 13th August. The final visit was on 18th and 19th November when the traps were removed. The main techniques used were as follows: • visual inspection of vegetation and accessible wood-decay for invertebrates; • spot-sweeping, i.e. targeting observed invertebrates for netting; • general sweep-netting, i.e. un-targeted; • hand search, e.g. by searching amongst woody debris; • beating foliage and branches of trees, shrubs and dwarf shrubs using beating tray; • beating blossom on flowering shrubs Wherever possible specimens encountered were identified in the field, retaining voucher specimens of the more critical species. Some larvae found amongst decaying wood were retained for rearing through to the more identifiable adult insect. Other specimens were taken away for inspection under microscope.
