The monitoring covers six sites in Wales: Tywyn Aberffraw, Newborough, and Morfa Harlech in north Wales, and Kenfig, Merthyr Mawr and Pembrey Burrows in south Wales. At each site, baseline monitoring was set up for the planned interventions and for control locations where no intervention will take place, in order to clearly show the effect of the restoration measures. For both intervention types, soil profiles were taken at each monitoring location. Soil profiles were recorded to a depth of 50 cm and soil samples were taken to a depth of 20 cm. In addition, the baseline monitoring for the notches involved setting up sand-rain collectors at transects away from the proposed notch and control locations, downwind in the direction of the prevailing winds. Each transect started at 50 m distance from the inland end of the notch, and then at two further points (100 and 200 m). Soil samples were analysed for bulk density, electrical conductivity, pH, organic matter content by loss on ignition (LOI), calcium carbonate content, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content.
