This aims to protect groundwater from over-abstraction and to prevent deterioration in groundwater quality that could increase the treatment of drinking water. Drinking Water Protected Areas are required to be identified under the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017. Within these drinking water protected areas we work with water companies to identify raw water sources that are ‘at risk’ of deterioration which would result in the need for additional treatment. In these areas we may establish Safeguard Zones where measures can be focused to protect groundwater that is abstracted for human consumption from deterioration in groundwater quality.
