Wales Water Vole Survey Data 2020
The Water Vole is now Wales fastest declining Mammal and has been classified as 'Endangered' in Wales in 2020 with the species disappearing from sites where it was previously present. Surveys were carried out in 2020 to assess the presence of Water Voles in areas which had previously recorded positive and negative sightings of the Water Voles across Wales. To accompany this the presence of Mink and Mink control were also recorded as the predator is a major cause in the decline of Water Vole in Wales. The surveys were carried out across 4 regions in Wales - North West, Mid East, South East and South West which were then divided into separate sites. The Data is in a spreadsheet format to accompany four separate Natural Resources Wales Evidence Report on the 2020 Water Vole Surveys for Wales.

Surveys were carried out in September and October 2020 when populations of Water Vole would be expected to be at their peak with young animals dispersing. This was undertaken in appropriate weather conditions and avoiding periods during, or immediately after spate conditions which could have removed important field signs. While any burrows and feeding remains were to be recorded, in this case it was the presence of latrines which was to be taken as the definitive proof of water vole presence. Surveyors were also asked to determine whether Mink were present and to comment on any known Mink control taking place. A spot-check survey methodology was instructed to determine presence/absence in previously surveyed areas. 1km squares. Surveyors recordednot only the presence/absence of water voles, but also the habitat and surrounding land use. The location of each site was determined with a 10 figure Grid Reference taken from the approximate centre of the site. An in-depth survey was not required for this contract.
