Bait digging areas 2019/2020
The data has been collected under a contract run under the Wales non-licensable activities project. Bait digging and collection of living resources was identified as an activity which is causing damage to the Marine Protection Area (MPA) network in Wales. The data obtained from this contract provides NRW with evidence which will help inform discussions around future management of this activity. A GIS layer was created through interpretation of the visible evidence of bait digging from the aerial images (NRW_DS124825 Bait digging areas aerial imagery 2019/2020). The GIS layer was created by digitising around areas identified as impacted by bait digging. In addition the layer displays site name, confidence in intrepretation, the age of the evidence (old/new) and digging intensity (low, medium and high) along with who captured the data, the date and image date.

To produce the GIS layer (BaitDiggingAreas_2019_2020), a virtual raster was created for each site using the aerial imagery as tiles. A 100m grid was applied over each site to ensure all areas of the site were examined. Aerial imagery was inspected at 1:250 scale. A scale of 1:500 was used to review areas where evidence of bait digging was not expected, and squares checked off when reviewed. The site surveyor and the digitiser discussed mapping of polygons in the areas visited by foot. The digitiser established what could be identified. It should be acknowledged that this layer has been created using the contractor’s interpretation of imagery (along with some ground truthing) and is not likely to respresent a complete picture of damage at these sites. It also represents a snapshot in time.
