WINS Water Quality: Opportunities for Reducing Nutrient Enrichment

This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows areas where management action could be taken to reduce nutrient enrichment in coastal and transitional waterbodies, as well as lakes and rivers. Management opportunities considered for reduction of nutrient enrichment are the restoration of land well-connected to the local water environment; hedgerow planting in proximity to agricultural land likely to be a diffuse source of nutrients; planting riparian woodland or wooded shelterbelts along drainage channels. For each opportunity type, prioritisation is based the number of downslope waterbodies that are known to have issues with nutrient enrichment.

How the map has been created: The map has been created by identifying the overall opportunity space for each land management option under consideration and then combining and prioritising them into a single layer summarising the opportunities to reduce nutrient enrichment. The opportunities for the individual management types have been identified by: Identifying land that currently does not have much potential to slow down overland flow and which could reach a better state to do so. Where this type of land is well connected to the water environment, an opportunity exists to weaken this connection through increasing surface roughness (thereby reducing overland flow), for example via habitat restoration or reducing grazing pressure. Identifying arable land that is well connected to the water environment. These arable areas are opportunity sites for working with hedgerows. Identifying land that is biophysically suitable for tree planting, is not affected by any constraints, and located within proximity to either rivers or drainage channels as well as agricultural land. These are opportunity areas for riparian planting or the creation of wooded shelterbelts around drainage channels. For prioritisation, coastal and transitional waterbodies, as well as rivers and lakes, with a nutrient enrichment problem were identified and their upslope areas calculated. Areas were prioritised according to the number of downstream waterbodies with known issues with nutrient inputs; areas feeding into multiple at-risk waterbodies were ranked a higher priority than areas feeding into a single waterbody. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider ground water The model does not consider point sources of nutrients such as sewer overflows The model does not consider opportunities to reduce fertiliser input into agricultural fields
