WINS Woodland Planting: Opportunities for Community Woodlands
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows planting opportunities for community woodlands, as well as already existing accessible and inaccessible woodlands within 2km of urban areas. Each of these three categories is separated into three demand classes: areas where many children are present; where the overall deprivation level is high; and where these two factors coincide, e.g. many children live in areas of high deprivation.

How the map has been created: The map has been created by identifying urban areas and identifying sites where many children live and/or where overall deprivation is high. Sites that allow for woodland planting have been identified following the methodology used for identifying opportunities for carbon sequestration. Out of this opportunity space, only opportunities covering an area of over 1ha and falling within 2 km of urban areas were retained. The remaining opportunities were categorised based on the demand type identified for the area. Demand was determined as illustrated in the table below. Additionally, areas of existing woodland falling within the urban perimeter were highlighted separately, and categorised as either accessible or not accessible. Woodland areas were selected from the Phase 1 dataset and classed as accessible if they had been mapped as such by the Woods for People project. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: Woodland accessibility is based completely on areas mapped by Wood for People polygon. National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many areas. All limitations from the carbon sequestration may apply. The map does not identify sensitivities to woodland planting, such as common land; the opportunity areas with sensitivities are shown in the carbon sequestration map, which should be consulted alongside this map to identify sensitivities to woodland planting. Some processing was carried out in the shapefile format; in some cases, areas that do not touch in shapefile format may appear in the rasterised output as if they were touching.
