WINS Woodland Planting: Opportunities for Woodland Planting for Rapid Turnover Forest
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows areas where rapid turnover woodland could be planted for the biomass and timber industries.

How the map has been created: To create this map, biophysical suitability for woodland planting was identified using ALC attribute data. As this type of woodland is planted with the intention of being worked, shallower slopes (which make working the plantation easier), are considered priority opportunities. Areas at high elevations and/or on aspects that face into the prevailing wind direction are given a reduced priority, as the wood produced in such plantations can be of lesser quality due to stunted and uneven growth. Within the resulting opportunity space, sensitivities were identified (e.g. acid sensitive catchments). Constraints (e.g. areas where woodland planting is not suitable due to existing land use and legislation) were then applied. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider ffridd areas as a sensitivity or constraint.
