WINS Urban Green Infrastructure: Demand for Urban Greenspace - Air Pollution
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows demand areas for greenspace based on locations with air quality issues, with air quality being based on annual average PM2.5. Along a colour gradient from dark green to dark brown the demand increases, based on a combination of three factors: the intensity of air pollution problem, population density and deprivation.

How the map has been created: The map has been created using monitoring results reporting on PM2.5 throughout Wales as an annual average. Areas with PM2.5 greater than 8 µg/m3 were considered as having the worst air quality (e.g. highest demand), with areas at between 6 µg/m3 and 8 µg/m3 are considered to have a moderate demand; all areas with lower levels of air pollution are not considered as demand space. This demand space has been combined with data on population density and WIMD to create an overall demand score for air pollution measures. For the WIMD, the two most deprived classes within (Rank 1 to 382) where considered to have the highest priority, with ranks 383 to 573 having some priority. Any less deprived areas are not considered to be a priority based on deprivation. In a similar manner, population density taken from the latest census data has been split into 5 classes for Wales using Jenks natural breaks. The two densest populated classes are forming the highest priority, the medium class has some priority, and less densely populated areas are not considered a priority based on population density. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: Air quality data accessible for this project reported on annual averages only. However, guidelines on air quality also consider the number of times per year that a critical, health-relevant cut-off value is exceeded. The addition of exceedance values could extend the demand space.
