There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: This map shows opportunities for enhancing surface roughness, for example by relaxing grazing pressure, restoring semi-natural habitat, increasing species diversity or through complete change in land use (e.g. woodland planting). Priority is given to areas that are well connected to the hydrological environment and/or currently have a low surface roughness. The opportunity spaces shown in the map are the areas that remain after the constraints have been applied. Habitats of high conservation value and high economic value have been considered a constraint, as in these areas it is unlikely to be possible or desirable to increase the surface roughness. The opportunity space on this map shows opportunities that remain after all constraints have been applied. Surface roughness could be derived from more direct measures than habitat scoring Instead of using a coastal buffer, ideally all areas would be masked out that do not have any features downslope of them. The network index, an output from the Scimap (Durham University, 2016) fine sediment risk model expressing how well connected an area of land is to the network of rivers and drainage channels, was used to identify areas where enhanced surface roughness would be disproportionally beneficial. Similarly, Phase 1 habitats have been used to approximate the current roughness of every piece of land. Opportunities were prioritised based on where the existing land cover class typically has low surface roughness, and/or the area was well connected to the wider water environment. Constraints for this map were based on the Phase 1 habitat map, showing where land of existing high value for biodiversity and land of high economic importance exist.
