Mapping the Extent of Calaminarian Grassland at Mwyngloddfa Cwmystwyth SSSI 2016/2017
The project aims to map the extent of the Annex 1 type 'H6130 Calaminarian grasslands of the Violetalia calaminariae' (Calaminarian grassland) on Mwyngloddfa Cwmystwyth Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the adjacent area of Elenydd SSSI in Ceredigion. The habitat here includes examples where Calaminarian grassland is characterised largely by the presence of metallophyte lichen species, although metallophyte bryophytes and vascular plants also indicate some forms of the community here. This survey built on previous work (Simkin, 2014) that sought to produce a more detailed categorisation of the habitat in mid Wales. This established that different forms of the habitat existed which were variously typified by metallophyte-rich spoil, grassland and heathland, as well as areas that were largely denuded of vegetation (bare, highly contaminated spoil).

Vegetation (including rock and bare ground) was mapped on site by walkover survey onto copies of aerial photographs. Areas that appeared to have been influenced by heavy metals were surveyed, focussed on metallophytes species. Calaminarian grassland was mapped in line with the categories defined by Simkin (2014). All observations were made by experienced surveyors following standard methodologies.
