Biodiversity Action Reporting System (BARS) Archived Action Data
An archive of NRWs (and legacy bodies) actions, boundaries and project data, downloaded December 2016, following the closure of the Biodiversity Action Reporting System. Biodiversity actions are recorded as GIS point and polygon data with related information held in spreadsheets. BARS was originally created to support the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UKBAP) and allowed organisations, companies and partnerships to manage and share their own Biodiversity Action Plans. The UKBAP closed in 2011 and the last version of BARS was launched in April 2012 to collate biodiversity actions in a standardised form and capture geographic locations, enabling spatial analysis and reporting of activity. The UK BARS partnership (DEFRA, Natural England, Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, Wales Biodiversity Partnership, and Joint Nature Conservation Committee) took the difficult decision to discontinue support for BARS in November 2016.

The actions were recorded by the various BARS project officers in an online map viewer. In many cases, there are multiple actions per polygon (hence duplicated polygon data). The GIS data should be rated as poor quality and needs cleaning. Data Repatriation: Data supplied to BARS is archived securely by JNCC. All organisations were offered an extract of their own action and project data (including spatial locations) to download and reuse in their own systems. From March 2017, this data will be downloadable by all interested parties direct from the JNCC website.
