A survey of calaminarian grassland in Mid-Wales
The aims of this project were to refine guidance on calaminarian habitat definition for mid-Wales, and to provide data and information on the extent of the different forms. The purpose of this data capture was to assess calaminarian grassland habitat types, condition and extent for each site, and to gather information on the distribution and frequency of metallophytes and other notable species. This was done by detailed survey of the plants and lichens of the calaminarian grasslands on 27 abandoned mine sites in mid-Wales, 26 in Ceredigion and 1 in Montgomeryshire, with mapping of the compartments in GIS. A wide variation in the character of calaminarian habitat was observed, including grass-dominated examples, metallophyte-rich heathland and largely-bare highly-contaminated land. Some of the vegetation was considered distinctive in both a British and European context. A total of 90 vascular plants, 38 bryophytes, 227 lichens and 15 lichenicolous fungi were recorded, including many species of conservation concern. Categories of calaminarian habitat types in mid Wales are presented, to facilitate future mapping of the habitat.

Vegetation compartments (including rock and bare ground) were mapped on site by walkover survey, using a satellite image to identify boundaries. Those that appeared to have been influenced by heavy metals were surveyed for all vascular plant, lichen and bryophyte taxa by recording those present in three representative areas of each compartment, supplemented by a more thorough search for metallophytes and other taxa indicative of habitat quality. Abundance was recorded using the DAFOR scale.
