Intertidal Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring Menai Strait and Conwy Bay (2012): Evaluating Intertidal Seagrass Beds – Field Survey Versus Remote Sensing
Seagrass beds are of special interest in Wales as features under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), a Section 42 habitat under the NERC Act (2006), a subfeature of Special Areas of Conservation under the Habitats Regulations and is a biological quality element (marine angiosperms) under the Water Framework Directive. As such, it is crucial that a reliable method of evaluating the quality (extent, density and species richness) of the seagrass beds is used. Traditionally, field observations are made, and records of the presence and extent derived from mapping using a GPS. Until recent years, the resolution of aerial photographs, taken from aircraft, has not been high enough to differentiate seagrass beds, unless they are particularly dense, with clearly defined edges. Many of the intertidal seagrass beds in Wales are patchy and of low density (5-50% cover) and cannot be identified reliably from 1:5,000 aerial photographs. This study uses an unmanned aerial vehicle to take higher resolution images, by flying lower, along with GPS positions, allowing for the many images to be stitched together and be orthorectified. The two methods are compared, each one proving to have certain benefits and short-comings.
