Mitten crabs are a catadromous species, migrating between fresh water and marine environments to reproduce. They spend the majority of their adult life in fresh water habitats, where they mature to reproductive size. Depending on mitten crab population density and habitat suitability, juvenile mitten crabs will migrate large distances up river to mature. The Dee Chinese mitten crab project set out to investigate the population of Chinese mitten crab in the Dee catchment and achieve a number of objectives including awareness raising, trialling and evaluating potential methods to monitor and manage the population and make inferences about the current and future status of the species in the Dee catchment.
