Marine Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Habitats in Wales (archived 2018)
This archived dataset consists of 37 datasets, and has been superseded by Environment (Wales) Act Section 7: Marine Habitats as part of the newer legislative requirements. This dataset is associated with the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) which was published back in 1994, and was the UK Government's response to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which the UK signed up to in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. Similarly under Section 42 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act, 2006 a 'list of the living organisms and types of habitat which in the Assembly's opinion are of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity' is required. The NERC Act in Wales, is being superseded by the Environment Act (Wales) 2016. This dataset will provided a basis on which to create a biodiversity list to meet the requirements of the Environment Act (Wales) set out under Section 6 and 7, which require biodiversity and resilience of ecosystem duty, and biodiversity lists and duty to take steps to maintain and enhance biodiversity are required, respectively. This includes the publishing of a list of types of habitats of principle importance in Wales, for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing biodiversity in relation to Wales. This dataset captured will contribute towards the identification of marine habitats of principle importance in Wales, and will be kept under review in order to keep the list up-to-date as per Section 7 of the Environment Act (Wales). These habitats include: blue mussel beds, Fragile sponge and anthozoan communities, Tide swept channels, Horse mussel beds, Maerl beds, Honeycomb worm reefs, Seagrass beds, Native oyster beds, Intertidal boulder communities, Intertidal mudflats, mud habitats in deep water, Sheltered muddy gravels, subtidal mixed muddy sediments, Estuarine rocky habitats, Peat and clay exposures, Carbonate reefs, Musculus discors beds, Saline lagoons, Coastal Saltmarsh, Sabellaria spinulosa (Ross worm) reefs, Seapens and burrowing megafauna communities and Subtidal sands and gravels.

The data was collated from a wide range of sources, including but not limited to Marine Recorder, Phase 1 Intertidal, HabMap and Marine Monitoring Data. Habitats layers were produced as both polygon and point data for many of the habitats (where both types of data exist – some layers only have point data). Each layer is accompanied by processing notes detailing data sources and all decision made in creating the layers. A standard template was also produced and documented for attributing the GIS layers and general assumptions that could be made.
- Additional Information
-
All habitat records include a confidence measure. Decisions about how these were applied are documented in the processing notes for each habitats. It is worth noting that some of the habitats are both OSPAR and Section 42, but due to slight differences in descriptions, this might not always be the case. Hence there is a true false field saying whether the data conforms the habitat description.
