Bangor University School of Ocean Science (SOS) Towed Video Survey in Liverpool Bay; Caernarfon Bay and Cardigan Bay (2012 - 2013)
In 2012 and 2013 video tows and photographic surveys were undertaken to ground truth the seabed around Cardigan Bay, Caernarfon Bay and Liverpool Bay. The Bangor University School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) surveyed five sites, two using fishing vessels and three using the Bangor University Research Vessel (RV) Prince Madog. In total sixty video tows were undertaken within circalittoral habitats; six of these had associated photographic stills, of which there were 570. The purpose of this data capture was to ground truth areas of the seabed around Cardigan Bay, Caernarfon Bay and Liverpool Bay. Confidence in this dataset is high as data was collected by scientists. Imagery was analysed using standard methods by competent and experienced surveyors.

Surveys were undertaken by Bangor University Research Vessel (RV) Prince Madog and various fishing vessels. RV Prince Madog was used to collect videos of the seabed using three cameras: - A Standard Definition (SD) ROVTECH Systems Ltd. underwater video camera with an approximate field of view of 41cm in the middle of the picture; - A High Definition (HD) GoPro video camera with approximate field of view of 70cm at the bottom of the picture and 100cm in the middle; - A Canon 400D stills camera with an approximate field of view of 0.13m squared (44cm by 30cm). Fishing vessels were used ot collect videos of the seabed using two cameras: - A GoPro HD video camera on a mini-sled towed behind a fishing vessel. The GoPro HD has approximate field of view of 70 cm at the bottom of the picture and 100 cm in the middle. - A Standard Definition ROVTECH Systems Micro Hi-Res Digital Colour Camera (1/3 inches Sony HAD CCD - 480 TV lines resolution) with 4.3 mm wide angle lens (approximately 80 degrees in water) and Mini Seabeam Light. Imagery was analysed for habitats, species and biotopes by Marine EcoSol using standard Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) derived techniques and Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Marine Habitat Classification. Photographic still, when taken, were approximately every 11 seconds along the tow to assist with species and habitat validation, but were not analysed independently of the video. Videos and stills were analysed by staff at Marine EcoSol and data was entered into excel spreadsheets and then into Marine Recorder.
