The status and distribution of the shrill carder bee Bombus sylvarum in the Kenfig National Nature Reserve (NNR) - Port Talbot (2013).
The shrill carder bee (Bombus sylarum) was once relatively widespread across southern England and lowlands Wales, favouring flower-rich habitats such as sand dunes and established grasslands and heathlands. However, there has been a recent decline in the population. The main purpose of this survey was to provide an up-to-date account of the current status of the species, with an emphasis placed on determining the distribution limits, by re-visiting sites with previous records and surveying sites supporting flower-rich dunes, grasslands and other habitats. The surveying took place in the Kenfig-Port Talbot area in Glamorgan between late July and early September 2013. This dataset provides an up-to-date account of the distribution of shrill carder bee (Bombus sylarum) across these sites around South Wales. It is a collection of sightings of shrill carder bee and botanical surveys. The botanical surveys had a particular emphasis on plants associated with the foraging behaviour of shrill carder bees. A total of 17 species of bumblebee, including shrill carder bee, were recorded during the survey with a total of 936 recorded observations of 2122 individual bumblebees.

Within each survey area a look and see approach was taken, to apply a flexible approach when efficiently identifying foraging or nesting areas more quickly. Where these foraging or nesting areas were located time counts were undertaken. All shrill carder bees were recorded as a centroid point using GPS and, or positions marked on to aerial images. As well as this all forage plants were noted and a species list recorded of all plants within a 3 m radius of the centroid using the DAFOR scale. These were then recorded at Phase 1 or NVC level where appropriate. All other Bombus species were noted alongside the shrill carder bee, and a photographic record was made of key features within each site. A total of 88.69 hours were spent carrying out dedicated fieldwork, during which the prescribed survey methods were applied. In addition, a further 14.85 hours of casual observations were carried out in areas with potential habitat totalling 103.54 hours. The data collected as part of this survey was also synchronized with South East Wales Biological Records Centre (SEWBReC). A survey of the coastal plain and inland lowland areas in central Glamorgan was carried out during late July and early September 2013, when numbers of workers and males were likely to be at their peak. Twelve days of fieldwork were undertaken, with good to fair weather prevailing throughout the period. Surveys targeted known sites, including Kenfig National Nature Reserve (NNR) (including Sker Point/Farm), Margam Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Margam Burrows, Parc Slip Nature Reserve, Maesteg Golf Course but equal emphasis was also placed on extending into areas previously unsurveyed and a range of potential sites with suitable habitats were systematically surveyed.
