Condition assessment of 8 standing water Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and 24 unprotected lakes across Wales (2012-2014).

Lake ecosystems are threatened both nationally and globally. Commitments under European legislation and international treaties require the UK to protect and enhance these in a conservation conscience way taking account of the culturally important habitats. This data collection forms part of an ecological and limnological survey. Limnology is the study of inland waters as ecological systems interact with their drainage basins and the atmosphere. The lakes surveyed were as follows: - Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Lake Surveys: Llynnau Cregennen, Llyn Dinas, Llyn Mair, Llyn Cerig-y-Myllt, Llyn Gwernan, Llyn Gwyddior and Llyn Coch-hwyad. - Lake Ecological Surveys: Llyn Cadarn, Llyn yr Wyth-Eidion, Llyn Coron, Llyn Goddionduon, Llyn Anafon, Gloyw Lyn, Llyn Cwm Bychan, Llyn Eiddew-mawr, Llandgorse Lake, Llyn Mawr, Cosmoeston Lake, Llyn Eiddwen, Llyn Fanod, Upper Talley Lake, Lower Talley Lake, Llyn Penrhyn. - Condition Assessment of Eight standing waters in Welsh SSSIs: Pysgodlyn Mawr, Llyn Llech Owain, Llyn Pencarreg, Witchett Pool, Llyn Treflesg, Llyn Cerrig-bach, Llyn Traffwll and Llyn Glasfryn. Data from this network of lakes, supports an integrated monitoring programme for protected sites, the Water Framework Directive and other legislative and policy driven initiatives. The Welsh Environment Strategy has imposed a target of 95% of all Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) to be in favourable condition by 2015. All the SSSIs assessed in this dataset were classes as being in unfavourable condition. Therefore another objective of this dataset is to provide initial monitor the condition of a series of SSSIs lakes in order to assess the need for improvement or increased monitoring in the future to reach the targets set by the Welsh Environmental Strategy. The data was also collected to fill the gaps in the quality and condition of unprotected sites in Wales, by targeting select lakes of potential biodiversity importance in Wales. This forms part of an on-going strategic survey programme designed by NRW to improve the understanding of the distribution and quality of different lake types in Wales.

Lineage

Without historical water chemistry monitoring data, lake sediments can provide a record of past environmental change. In particular, the siliceous valves of diatoms (microscopic algae) preserved in the sediments can be used as indicators of past limnological conditions, especially lake pH and nutrient concentrations. By identifying the degree of pollution problems, this technique allows judgements on the ecological condition of sites. Palaeolimnology was used to provide additional insights into environmental change at lake sites. This data has a number of associated methods. The BAP lake surveys. Llynnau Cregennen, Llyn Dinas, Llyn Mair, Llyn Cerig-y-Myllt, Llyn Gwernan, Llyn Gwyddior and Llyn Coch-hwyad. Eight lakes were selected for their potential biodiversity importance base on aerial photography and local knowledge. The sites selected were Llynnau Cregennen (two sites), Llyn Dinas, Llyn Mair, Llyn Cerig-y-Myllt, Llyn Gwernan, Llyn Gwyddior and Llyn Coch-hwyad. Site assessments were based on aquatic macrophyte surveys and mapping, bathymetric survey, physico-chemical measurements, and at 4 sites, palaeolimnological analyses. Lake Ecological Surveys. The 16 lakes were surveyed to assess the species and abundance of aquatic plants within and around the lake, and to measure water clarity, dissolved oxygen and the temperature within the lakes. At Llyn Goddionduon a sediment core was collected from the deep water and analysed for the possible remains of diatom, in order to infer past environmental conditions and water quality. Condition Assessment of eight standing waters in Welsh SSSIs. The 8 lake assessments were conducted based on aquatic macrophyte surveys and mapping, bathymetric survey, physic-chemical measurements and at four sites, palaeolimnological analyses.
