The purpose of this data capture was to assess the condition of the Water Courses of Plain to Montane Levels with the Ranunculion Fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion Vegetation. The aim of the work was to assess the conservation condition of this habitat. This dataset presents the results of the Common Standards Monitoring Assessment (CSM) of the River Wye and selected tributaries. The assessment was performed based on data collected in 1995 and in 2005. The CSM assessment was based purely on macrophyte survey data as these were the only comparable data available from the 1995 surveys. Each macrophyte is assigned a measure of its percentage cover and of its abundance relative to other taxa. In addition, some physical features are recorded against standard classes and values. A section is typified by running the data through a key (Holmes et al. 1999, page: 104), which will lead to one of the types listed in Appendix C. Recording Mean Trophic Rank involves a surveyor walking the wetted area of the channel for 100 m, recording the cover of all macrophytes on a five point scale. The abundance of each scoring taxon is then multiplied by the score for the taxon (STR) provided in the manual, all the scores are summed and the total divided by the sum of the cover values to derive an MTR score. A series of thresholds are then given from which the decision is made as to whether or not the discharge is considered to have a significant enough effect that it needs to be modified. Common Standards Monitoring involves analysis of a number of different data sets including those derived from JNCC macrophyte survey and from River Habitat Survey (RHS). If any of the analyses fail, then the section is deemed to have failed. For this reason, it is reasonable to consider only one element of the river CSM process - the macrophyte element.
