Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Woodland Habitat at four SACs in North and Mid Wales (2007)
The four Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) surveyed were Coedydd Derw a Safleoedd Ystlumod Meirion/Meirionnydd Oak woods and Bat Sites; Rhinog; Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt and Cwm Doethie Mynydd Mallaen. The Annex 1 habitats surveyed were old sessile oak woods with Ilex and Blechnum (Habitat 91AO); alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae) (Habitat 91EO); Tilio-Acerion forests of slopes, screes and ravines (Habitat 9180), and bog woodland (Habitat 91DO). The project was completed in two phases, a survey phase and a monitoring phase. The survey phase of the contract had two main objectives: first, to assess the condition of Annex I woodland habitat within individual management compartments and second, to identify and map hot-spots for lichens and bryophytes. The monitoring phase had a single principal objective: to establish, permanently mark and record 28 sampling plots in areas identified by CCW; these plots will form the basis of long-term monitoring on the sites.

Survey phase methodology broadly followed that set out in Kirby et al. (2002) and the Common Standards Monitoring Guidance for Woodland Habitats (JNCC, 2004). Within each management compartment, the condition of the woodland was assessed against a suite of attributes and targets provided by the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and the stand was assigned to either a favourable or unfavourable condition class. As a rule, at least ten sample points were recorded in woodland blocks over 10 hectares and at least twenty were recorded in blocks over 30 hectares. Once fieldwork for the survey phase was completed, all data was recorded on to Excel spreadsheets. These were hot-linked to MapInfo tables recording stopping points, hot-spots and negative attributes. On completion of the survey phase of the contract, the draft survey maps were submitted to CCW who used the data to inform the choice of areas in which to establish monitoring plots. The principal objective of the monitoring phase of the contract was to establish, permanently mark and record 28 sampling plots in areas identified by CCW. These plots will form the basis of long-term monitoring on the site and provide more detailed and objective information on the small areas of woodland they encompass than the broader brush survey phase of the contract.
