Freshwater Macrophytes in Nant Teyrn - Freshwater Environmental Change Protocol (2006)
Scott Wilson was commissioned to undertake a macrophyte survey of Nant Teyrn in Snowdonia National Park. The aim of this survey was to provide macrophyte monitoring data on a 100m stretch of Nant Teyrn within the Snowdonia Environmental Change Network (ECN) terrestrial site. The following elements were recorded: · Macrophyte species present and their relative abundance with reference to the check list of aquatic macrophytes used in ECN. Macrophytes include any plant observable by the naked eye and nearly always identifiable when observed. This includes all aquatic vascular plants and bryophytes, together with groups of algae which can be seen to be composed predominantly of a single species · Species distribution along a river length and zonation at selected sample points. · Physical characteristics of the sampling location

The macrophyte survey covered a 50 m length of the river immediately upstream of the ECN chemical sample point and 50 metres immediately downstream of the weir. The two 50 m survey sections were measured accurately along the left bank using a tape measure to ensure ease of future replication. Each 50 m length was divided into five 10m units using ranging poles and a field assistant to mark the end points of each unit. Percentage cover and relative abundance estimates were made for all species of floating and submerged macrophytes contained within the river channel area. All such macrophytes seen submerged or partly submerged at low flow levels were recorded. At the sides of the river all macrophytes growing on parts of the substrata that are likely to be submerged for more than 85% of the time were also included. Percentage cover estimates were made for all macrophyte species in the river channel in each 10 m section of the 100 m length. The following attributes were recorded in each 10 m survey unit as an aid in the interpretation of macrophyte data: Width, Depth, Substrate, Habitats, Shading, Water clarity and Bed stability.
