Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Lesser Horseshoe Bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Bat Sites SAC's (2006)
Special Area of Conservation (SAC) monitoring of Lesser Horseshoe Bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) in the Wye Valley, commuting route and foraging areas were investigated. The study considered five nursery roosts and one hibernation roost on the Welsh side of the Wales-England border. The roosts are all subject to regular annual monitoring and it was not a requirement of this study to reproduce the monitoring effort. Primary focus of the project was to identify and verify important foraging habitats for lesser horseshoe bats and to assess the condition of commuting routes between roosts and forage areas. The purpose of this data capture was to assist in the survey each surveyor was issued with a bat detector and each team had one Pettersson D-240x and one Skye Instruments SBR2100 bat detectors available to them. Detectors were set to a frequency of 108 kHz, the 'peak' echolocation frequency for lesser horseshoe bats.

Whilst in the field each team was given comparative freedom to assess which routes were being used by the bats to fly between roosts and forage areas. Whilst in the field basic data on air temperature was continually recorded. Other data recorded, onto printed maps, was the direction and time of any lesser horseshoe bat passes. Areas where foraging behaviour could be detected and confirmed were also noted. On average two hours were spent in the field recording as much activity as possible. The actual assessment of each nursery site was done on the basis of deploying two teams of two surveyors in the field on two different evenings. Only evenings with relatively stable weather conditions were used for survey. One of the survey evenings was spent comparatively close to the roost, whilst the second evening was spent further away, usually between 1.5 km and 3 km of the roost.
