FishMap Môn Project - Anglesey
FishMap Môn is a collaborative project between Natural Resources Wales (NRW), the Welsh Government, and the recreational and commercial fisheries sectors. Project Partners include The North Wales Fisherman's Cooperative Limited, Bangor Mussel Producers Limited and The Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers. The project sets out to inform the sustainable management of the Welsh marine environment by collecting and mapping fishing activity and subsequently combining this with information on seabed habitats and their sensitivity to such activities. It was jointly funded 75% / 25% between the European Fisheries Fund and the Welsh Government. The pilot project focuses on an area around Anglesey in North Wales covering the waters out to 12 nautical miles. The Project area is located between Nefyn to the west and the Great Orme to the east and extends out to the Welsh 12 nautical mile limit. It encompasses an area of approximately 265 kmsq, of which approximately 3% are Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and 3% are Special Protection Areas (SPAs). The main aim of the project is to survey commercial, recreational and charter boat fishermen, map the distribution and intensity of fishing activity around Anglesey and combine it with seabed habitat maps and their sensitivities to fishing activity. The project aimed to deliver the following outputs: - Mapped fishing activity for a range of commercial and recreational fishing activity in the Project area. Maps have been created following surveys of approximately 50 commercial fishers and 600 recreational fishers. - The FishMap Môn Guidance Tool; an easy to use web based mapping application allowing stakeholders to view fishing activity data or hypothetical fishing scenarios in combination with seabed habitats and their sensitivity. - An evaluation of how learning from FishMap Môn could be applied to managing the marine environment in Wales. - A literature review to explore global case studies where an Ecosystem Approach has been applied to managing the marine environment. The review will identify lessons learnt and how they relate to Wales - Lessons in stakeholder engagement and collaborative working with the fishing industry The project also aimed to develop a trial method for gathering fishing activity data from recreational and commercial fishing communities; and, to develop and test an indicative, web based guidance tool for the pilot area using GIS Techniques.

FishMap Môn piloted methods to inform the sustainable management of the Welsh marine environment by collecting and mapping information about fishing activity and combining it with existing information on seabed habitat types and their sensitivity to fishing activities using GIS tools. Commercial and recreational fishers were surveyed during one-to-one interviews or by postal questionnaires during 2011-2012. Participants mapped the locations of their fishing activity using Admiralty Charts or Ordinance Survey Maps and secondly provided details about the characteristics of their fishing to allow fishing intensity to be determined. All the information was recorded onto GIS. Detailed and generalised layers were produced due to sensitivity of the information, therefore lower resolution GIS layers were produced. FishMap Mon was undertaken as a pilot project giving a general indication of where a limited amount of fishing activity is thought to have occurred at a given time, and its expected impact on marine habitats. This fishing effort dataset was a snap shot in time and may not be representative of current fishing practices in the study area or the rest of Wales. There is a low level of confidence in the data and trail methodology.
