Special Protection Area (SPA) Monitoring: Bird features within Welsh SPAs (2005)
This datasets presents a preliminary exploration of the potential use of existing data sets to inform assessments of the condition of Special Protection Area (SPA) features across Wales. The approach adopted for this study was to assess each species/assemblage in the individual SPAs. The most recent list of SPAs in Wales (UK SPA review) contains inconsistencies in the qualifying species/assemblage features when comparisons are made between the Natura 2000 datasheets, the SPA review, site documentation and the SPA review - species documentation. The aim of this data capture was to: 1 To produce draft performance targets for bird features within Welsh Special Protection Areas, in accordance with the JNCC Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance for birds. 2 To make a preliminary assessment of whether performance targets have been met for the 6 year JNCC report. 3 To identify where existing data are insufficient to report on the performance targets.

The only data held is that within the report itself. This assessment involved four stages: 1 Identification of the features 2 Collation of data on the sites and features to allow baseline values to be confirmed 3 Identification of feature targets in line with Joint Nature Conservancy Council (JNCC) Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance for birds 4 Assessment of current condition of each feature to be made and data deficiencies to be identified.
